Houston Sees Increase in Fatal Speeding Accidents

The Houston Chronicle recently found Houston roads and drivers to be some of the most deadly in the country. Now, in a new article, the Chronicle has highlighted an increase in fatal speeding accidents in Houston.

Using data from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), the Chronicle found that fatal vehicle accidents fell in Texas by 40 percent between mid-March and May in comparison to the same period in 2019. In the Houston area, crashes fell by 19 percent, but the number of speed-related crash fatalities actually increased. Speed-related fatal crashes increased by 13 percent.

What Is Speeding?

Most motorists understand that speeding is the act of driving faster than the posted speed limit. However, if a motorist drives too fast for certain road conditions, like rain or ice, it is also considered speeding.

What Are the Dangers of Speeding?

Speeding puts you, your passengers and other vehicles on the road at risk. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), speeding is dangerous because:

  • There is a greater chance of losing control of the vehicle.
  • It requires shorter reaction time if the motorist perceives danger.
  • It reduces the effectiveness of the vehicle’s protection equipment (i.e. seatbelts, airbags).
  • It increases the impact of the crash, which can lead to greater injuries and/or death.

What Are Texas Speed Limit Laws?

Texas interstates have some of the highest speed limits in the country. In fact, Texas has the highest posted speed limit in the United States – 85 miles per hour (mph) on State Highway 130. Urban highways and other roads have a maximum speed limit of 75 mph. Rural highways generally have maximum speed limits of 75 or 80 mph.
