Statistics and Causes
In 2009, more than 300 accidents involving cranes occurred in the United
States, resulting in 197 deaths and numerous injuries. Cranes are seen
on almost every large construction site. There are more than 125,000 cranes
in use in the construction industry – in addition to up to 100,000 more
in general and maritime industries – and over 250,000 workers who operate them.
Crane accidents and injuries can be caused in several ways:
- Tipping caused by overloading / improperly secured load
- Dropped loads
- Hitting a power line
- Crushing caused by the counter weight
- Crashes caused by improper maintenance of the crane
- Rigging failures
- Boom collapse
- Crashes caused by driver error, inattention, or insufficient training
The Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA) has recently
ramped up efforts to stop crane accidents by improving safety regulations.
OSHA has estimated that as many as 90% of crane operators do not have
certification. Members of this regulatory board will be visiting construction
sites to provide consultations and inspections of cranes in an effort
to make these environments safer for workers.
