The days surrounding Thanksgiving are some of the most dangerous days to be on the road. In part, this is because of increased road traffic. Last year, the American Automobile Association (AAA) estimated that nearly 45.5 million people traveled by car to celebrate Thanksgiving across the United States.
However, the night before Thanksgiving has become an unofficial national holiday itself. It is known for binge drinking and has nicknames like Drunksgiving and Blackout Wednesday. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 800 people died in alcohol-impaired traffic crashes around Thanksgiving between 2012 and 2016.
Last year, according to data published by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), there were 55 fatalities due to 50 traffic crashes in the days surrounding Thanksgiving. Out of those 50 traffic crashes, 38 percent involved drunk drivers.
At the Law Office of Daniel D. Horowitz, III PC, we want you to have a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving with friends and family. Please do not drink and drive during the holiday. If you suspect a drunk driver on the road, ask a passenger to call your local law enforcement agency at 9-1-1. Do not put your life at risk. If you feel threatened, pull over before you make the call.
