Fatal Car Accidents in Harris County Days After Texas Stay-at-Home Order Expires

Harris County and Houston’s stay-at-home order is currently extended through May 20, 2020. However, Governor Abbott lifted the statewide stay-at-home order on May 1, 2020. Abbott’s order allows many businesses to start reopening under specific restrictions and guidelines.

According to an article by ABC13 KTRK News, traffic has spiked since Abbott’s order went into effect. Within the first couple days of the lifted order, five people were killed in traffic accidents in Harris County. Houston Police Department (HPD) officials confirmed that three of those accidents were related to alcohol and/or drugs.

As Houston and Harris County continue to reopen, it is important to stay alert and be a cautious driver. As more vehicles get back on the road, we can expect to see car accidents continue to increase.

With Memorial Day coming up, we urge everyone to not drink and drive during the holiday weekend. If you see a dangerous driver on the road, report the vehicle. You can report the vehicle to your local law enforcement agency by dialing 9-1-1. Ask a passenger to do it or pull over before you make the call.
